His family was estranged, but it was never fully understood why he abandoned his wife, children, relatives and the privileged life he led. Surviving the day on his fishing booty, he never had more than a few dollars in his pocket, and that money was sure to be spent by the end of the day.
The community that Suttree lives in is full of characters who make friends, support and care for each other. Every character is born to understand what they have in common. Everyone experiences varying degrees of pain and despair.
The world McCarthy describes is layered in detail, and through Suttree’s gaze the basic and temporary nature of life is revealed.
