Sisters – Audiobook Online

Sisters – Audiobook Online By: Daisy Johnson

From a Booker Prize finalist and an international literary star: a dazzling portrait of a dark sibling relationship, inside and out.

“One of the hottest writers of her generation” (Entertainment Weekly), Daisy Johnson is the youngest writer to be shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. Now she’s back with Sisters, a haunting tale of two sisters caught up in a web of powerful emotions and struggling to understand where to end and where to begin.

Born just 10 months apart, July and September are thick as thieves, never needing anyone but each other. Now, after a school bullying incident, the teenagers have moved with their single mother to a long-abandoned house near the beach. In their new, isolated life, July finds that the deep bond she has always shared with September is changing in ways she cannot fully comprehend.

A feeling of fear and insecurity crept through the house. Meanwhile, on the outside, the two sisters push the boundaries of behavior – until a shocking series of encounters test the limits of their shared experience, and force shocking revelations about their past and the future of girls.

Written in the radically creative language and imagery of an author whose work has been described as “fascinating” (The New Yorker), “a force of nature” (The New York Times Book Review), and “wonderfully weird, wild, and unsettling” (Celeste Ng), Sisters is a one-of-a-kind punch of ferocious rage and heartbreak – a tense, powerful narrative and insight into blood brotherhood and what happens when two sisters face each other’s darkest urges.

I really enjoyed this little novel. It took longer to read than I expected because you have to pay attention all the time. The plot is complex, the voices and characters are carefully created. I really, really like it. I wish I was still teaching. It would be fun to teach this to high school students. Well done!

Beautifully written psychological suspense story. Easily the most engaging book I’ve picked up in a year. If you want a neat and tidy story in regular packaging, this one isn’t for you. However, if you appreciate the ambiguity and complexity conveyed in dreamy, flowing prose, then you will enjoy. Reminds me a little bit of both Henry James and Heidi Julavits.
