Gil Cunningham had hoped that the first time he set foot in the brothel on the Drygate it would also be his last, but by the time all was settled he felt quite at home within its artfully painted chambers.The shabby house, along with the property next door and two other homes in Strathblane, were all part of the deal offered to Gil and his wife Alys by the powerful Dame Isabella. Her proposal also concerns Gil’s youth ward, and matters are further confounded by the outbreak of counterfeit money in Glasgow, which Gil has been ordered to investigate.
Later, Dame Isabella is found dead under strange circumstances, and the more Gil pursues the cause of her death, the more counterfeit coins he finds. And then the lustful lover, the mysterious Madam Xanthe, gets involved and there are rumors that the Devil is overseas in Strathblane. By the time Gil and Alys had solved the problem, some very surprising – and sinister – things had come to light.
I throughly enjoyed this book as i do all pat mcintosh books aka gill cunningham.
