1953, South of France. The fragile peace between the West and Soviet Russia hangs on the blade. And a family has been torn apart by conflicting secrets and loyalties.
Eloïse Caussade was a brave young French woman who grew up on a bull farm near Arles in the Camargue. She idolized her brother, André, and when he left to become an Intelligence Officer working for the CIA in Paris to help protect France, she soon followed him. After trading the strict confines of her father’s farm for a life of freedom in Paris, her world comes to life.
But everything changes when André is injured – a direct consequence of Eloise’s actions. Unable to work, André returns to her father’s farm, but Eloïse’s guilt and responsibility for his injuries leads her to track down the man who plotted to kill him.
Eloïse found her homeland in turmoil and conflict. Those angry at the construction of a nearby US airbase, with its lethal nuclear weapons, confronted its supporters, and anger erupted into violence, led by Union agents. Stirring bucket. Throughout all this turmoil, Eloïse is relentlessly hunting for the one who betrayed her brother and his country, while she is learning to see the people she loves and see herself in a different light. She no longer knew who she could trust. Who is working for Soviet Intelligence and who is not? And on which side is her family located?
I have read every book Kate Furnival has written. Her characters come to life. The stories are so well written and the imagery of her words paint such graphic images. the only problem is it takes so long for a new book!
