The Harper’s Quine is a historical mystery novel written by Pat McIntosh. The story is set in medieval Glasgow, Scotland, and follows the investigation of a murder of a young girl named Marion. The main character, Gil Cunningham, is a lawyer and amateur detective who is hired by Marion’s father to find her killer.

As Gil delves deeper into the case, he discovers that Marion was not who she seemed to be and that her murder may be connected to a larger conspiracy involving the city’s powerful merchants. Along with his friend and colleague, Alys, Gil navigates the complex web of lies and deceit that surrounds Marion’s death.

The novel provides a vivid portrayal of medieval life in Scotland, including the social hierarchy, religious practices, and legal system of the time. McIntosh’s attention to historical detail adds depth and authenticity to the story, making it an engaging read for fans of both historical fiction and mystery novels.

Overall, The Harper’s Quine is a well-crafted and entertaining mystery novel that offers readers a glimpse into medieval Scotland and the lives of its inhabitants.

Pat Mcintosh’s Harper’s Quine has meticulous research and clever writing, but the mystery unfolds so slowly and passively that I didn’t find it as interesting as I expected. It’s a whodunit solved by a lot of time and methodical detection.

Although I eventually got to know the main characters, at first I found it very difficult to distinguish between the different supporting characters. Unfortunately, my confusion continues to the ending chapters.

The author has excellent knowledge of the workings of the medieval church, the law, daily life, the Scottish neighborhood and the times.
