“Full disclosure: I’m not a huge fan of Kate Atkinson. I’ve read some of her previous works and they don’t appeal to me as much as other readers. That said, I do. really enjoyed the setting and the main character of this latest story.Teddy is a wonderful man, a hero in my mind, and someone I would love to sit and chat with.He’s almost the same age. my father, who also flew bombers (to Japan, not Europe) and I saw similarities in their behavior when they returned home from the war.
If the whole novel were about Teddy, we’d instead be given a plot involving Viola, the obnoxious and horrible daughter of Teddy and his wife Nancy. She’s completely unlovable and I hate to spend so much time with her when I could spend it with Teddy.
The story spans decades and ends happily for most of the characters. But, it’s been a long road.
The narrator, Alex Jennings, does a great job capturing the energy and voices of so many characters.” Listen to the Audiobook.
