In the midst of foraging season in the village of Heronsdene, Kent, Maisie Dobbs, psychologist and investigator, takes on a task from James Compton, son of her longtime supporter, Lady Rowan Compton, to examine aspects of a land to buy goods on his behalf.
Attracted to the local community, with their prejudice against seasonal workers from London and the traveling gypsies flocking to Kent at harvest time, Maisie quickly joined the effort. In an effort to uncover the source of petty crime in the area, a series of fires burned Heronsdene for years.
As she is drawn deeper into the investigation, Maisie is increasingly intrigued by the particular melancholy and secretive mood that pervades the village, a feeling heightened by the villagers’ fear. What made them so afraid?
