Earthly Remains – Commissario Brunetti Mysteries Book 26

Earthly Remains is the 26th mystery and horror novel in the Commissario Brunetti Mysteries series by author Donna Leon. Leon writes about the beauty of nature, its impact on Brunetti, who is on vacation, and the death of the earth. It is exemplified by the pollution of laguna, the death of bees and the death of his friend Casati. In this book, Brunetti tries to solve a murder. This is the best novel set in Venice that attracts fans thanks to its role as an insider about La Serenissima. From family meals to coffee shops, vaporetto rides to Venetian homes and apartments are details of everyday life in Venice. Corruption, tourists never run out and so are crimes big and small. The Commission of Leon Guido Brunetti is a character who loves his family and city, Brunetti relentlessly pursues the truth and defends justice.

In this book, Brunetti’s endurance and patience are tested. During the interrogation of an arrogant man, suspected of giving drugs to a young girl and then dying, Brunetti acted rashly, regretting his actions. He realized that he needed a break, needed to get away from work-related things.

Brunetti took a short sabbatical to escape the fatigue and other offenses he witnessed every day at work. He retreats to an island in the Venetian lagoon north of the city, peace and comfort in rural isolation, fitness and bonding with an old family friend, Davide Casati .

When Brunetti was allowed a sabbatical from Questura, his wife Paola took him to a wealthy relative’s mansion on Sant’Erasmo, the largest island in laguna. He skipped nights reading Pliny’s Natural History. The commercial vacation went according to plan; Davide Casati, the caretaker of the home on Sant’Erasmo, went missing after a sudden storm. Brunetti was forced to investigate, put off leave and investigate this unexpected incident. When Casati goes missing one morning, the story turns to darkness, the story continues to involve the investigation of Casati’s disappearance. Did Casati commit suicide? Was that an accident? Is it murder?

This book also speaks to the beauty of a city that is centuries old. Locked in time but forced into the modern world, Venice is a magical city with ancient methods of crime and mercenary like all cities. The book, along with the characters led by David Colacci, makes the story more realistic, with a happy ending. Friend loved events and plots that were logically concluded.

This is one of Leon’s fascinating Brunetti books. It is more personal and obviously more sincere of the observer watching the devastation of her favorite city and area.
