Jared Diamond did field work in New Guinea for over 30 years presenting the geographical and ecological factors that have shaped the modern world. From an evolutionary biologist’s point of view, he highlights the most extensive movements both literally and conceptually on every continent since the Ice Age. He examines the advancements of society such as writing, religion, government, and technology. Diamond also dissects the racial theories of global history, and the result – Guns, Germs, and Steel – is a major contribution to our understanding of the evolution of human society.

The Fate of Human Society is the sub-title of this book and it has gripped me. I’ve been listening to the histories of several societies lately and I thought this might be interesting to do some comparisons. What I’m not ready for is galloping through human history from our first hunter-gatherer groups wandering out of Africa to explain in detail why Eurasia due to its geography it is destined to be more successful than the Americas and Africa.
