Miles Halter is mesmerized by the famous last words – and is tired of living a safe life at home. He went to boarding school in search of what the dying poet François Rabelais called “Perhaps Great”. What awaits Miles in Culver Creek, including Alaska Young, who will drag Miles into her maze and launch him into the Great Maybe.

Searching for Alaska brilliantly captures the indelible impact one life can have on another. This stunning modern classic marks the emergence of best-selling author John Green as a groundbreaking new voice in contemporary fiction.

The book follows Miles, a quiet guy who arrives at a boarding school in search of a great cause. He made new friends, enjoyed life and felt like he had found what he was looking for.

The book doesn’t have a chapter number that really bothers me, the chapter title is a countdown to a date or event that I find fascinating. The characters are well described, not so much their personalities but their personalities. The best thing about this book is how authentic it is. The characters, the conversations, the experiences are all appropriate for 16-17 year olds in school. The thoughts, feelings and reactions are very real and I very easily absorb the story because if it is invested. There was only one time when a teacher’s reaction to a joke wasn’t quite right and it stood out because it was the only part of the book that didn’t feel real.
