Mech Zero: The Dominant is a mystery novel by author B. V. Larson.
This story is a prequel to the outbreak of war. The series deals with primitive human colonies in a region of space formerly occupied by a vicious alien species.
Along the edge of the galaxy hangs a loose configuration of about 60 stars known as the Faustian Chain. This glittering solar vortex is rich in planets and occupies an unusual volume of space about 20 light-years across. The series presents a colorful display of plasma lines, glowing nebulae, and sparkling points of light. The Chain settlers knew that the area had recently been inhabited by other species – creatures that had almost disappeared after waging devastating wars thousands of years ago. Little is known about them, but certain areas where their artifacts persist have been forbidden by interstellar law.
This is a prequel to the Mech series. As it does not require you to be familiar with the series, I recommend this novella to new comers. However, I strongly recommend this series (Mech 1: The Parent, Mech 2: The Savant and Mech 3: The Empress).
This series has never disappointed me and has always delivered the high entertainment I seek. This fantastic novella packed a lot of wallop of a story in only 57 pages. The authored cover all basis in this story, which was short but well written and flowed smoothly. Hopefully there will be more Imperium mischief to come beyond Mech 1-3.
I highly recommend this novella and series to fellow SF readers and also recommend to fellow dark urban fantasy readers who are looking for a good space opera but do not want to end up with a space romance.
