Portrait of a Muslim family – from their early days in Uganda to hard times in a new country, and a tragic accident that forces them to face the ghosts of their past

Mansoor Visram has lived in Canada for 25 years, since dictator Idi Amin expelled South Asians from Uganda. As a refugee with a wife and children, Mansoor has tried his best to recreate the life they once had, but starting over in Canada is much more difficult than he expected. He worked as a used car salesman, gas station attendant, and now he runs a small dry cleaner in suburban Calgary. He is hatching plans for a father-son empire that will bring back the wealth and status the Visrams enjoy in Uganda.

His son Ashif did not share his dream, and he moved across the country to escape his father. He’s a rising star at a multinational corporation in Toronto, on a life-changing rise, but he feels as though he can’t forget his longtime girlfriend. Mansoor’s wife, Layla, has spent the past decade running her home cooking business and trying to mend the family. But strange Ashif visits home and Mansoor’s arrogance nearly ruins their marriage. As the rifts that began many generations ago – and away from the continents – reappear, Mansoor, Ashif and Layla grow further and further apart.
