Second Lieutenant Andrew Dahl has just been appointed to the Universal Union Capital Ship Intrepid, the flagship of the Universal Union since 2456. It is a prestigious position, and Andrew is all the more delighted to be appointed to his son’s Xenobiology laboratory. ship. Life couldn’t get any better… until Andrew begins to realize the fact that (1) every Away Mission involves some sort of deadly confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, chief scientific officer, and handsome Lieutenant Kerensky have always survived these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-level crew member is, sadly, always killed.
Unsurprisingly, a lot of the power underneath the deck is expanded Mission at all costs avoid being assigned to Away. Then Andrew stumbles upon information that completely changes his and his colleagues’ understanding of what the Intrepid spaceship really is… and presents them with a crazy, high-risk opportunity. to save his own life.
John Scalzi is the funniest writer out there, and along with Wil Wheaton, they’re the coolest duo to listen to. The book begins with a sort of grumbling at the cool feeling of the water. The new guy treatment is spot on. So even people who are not sci-fi fans will enjoy the first three hours. The more weird the story gets, the more I like the turn and I wish JS could come up with a better explanation. The story actually ends around five hours and then you get Coda’s which isn’t very fun. Coda one is fun, but lasts too long.
The Coda one was also a bit vexed with the creators of the original Star Trek. As a Star Trek fan, I love to laugh at myself and the show throughout the story. J.S. seems to use coda to say, hey, if you’re so stupid to figure that out, I think the writers of Star Trek are either lazy or stupid. Scalzi wouldn’t have done his homework otherwise he would have known that Gene Roddenberry started a nonviolent program. During the trial period, cowboys want to be a big deal and life blood otherwise they will not broadcast the show. As a result, Red Shirt was killed. Coda two gave a serious message, but got no answer.
