Poet, memoir, labor organizer and Episcopal priest, Pauli Murray helped change the law of the land.

Arrested in 1940 for sitting in a white zone on a bus in Virginia, Murray turned that momentous event into a degree in Howard law and the fight against “Jane Crow” sexism.

Her legal excellence was pivotal in overturning the Plessy v. Ferguson case, the success of the Brown v. Board of Education case, and the Supreme Court’s recognition that the equal protection clause applies. for women; it also connected her with progressive leaders like Eleanor Roosevelt, Thurgood Marshall, Betty Friedan and Ruth Bader Ginsberg.

Now, Murray is finally getting the long-deserved recognition: The first African-American woman to receive a doctor of law at Yale, her name honored in one of the university’s new colleges. learn. Cleverly republished with a new introduction, Murray’s remarkable memoir takes its rightful place among the great civil rights autobiographies of the 20th century.

This book is not just inspirational. It shows how she overcame her depression, worked odd jobs, and still succeeded in her education. One of my favorite quotes from this book is, “No job is filthy but the one that stains the soul.” Great read, I learned a lot from Pauli Murray!

Pauli Murray is my hero. This book is well written. Her stories and life are fascinating. I wish she was a household name like some of the others because she was the actual MVP of the Brown v. Board of Education case. Highly recommend the book!
