Miss Fortune’s books are a guilty pleasure. They won’t change the world, give you insight into human nature, or make you a better person. But, not every book needs to do that. A balanced diet allows for certain foods to be eaten, and so does balanced reading. Sometimes you feel like a jerk, sometimes you don’t. The series Miss Fortune written by Jana DeLeon is very funny and funny. You turn the pages, you laugh, you roll your eyes and you feel amused. It’s a treat like anything your poison could be: a margarine, a donut, a piece of chocolate… Here and then gone.
They don’t stick with me, but I’m always happy to see the next one. Don’t think that because these books are light, they’re not well-written. Literature gets all the respect, but writing humor is extremely difficult and it requires great ingenuity. What’s even more remarkable is that she wrote 13 entertaining books in this series! We haven’t gotten tired of them yet, because they don’t read like tired rereading. The books are fast-paced, the characters are more dimensional than you’d expect, and the town of Sinful Louisiana is still sticky and quirky. These are books that my husband and I both read and enjoy in their essence. The mystery begins with the poisoning of a local underdog during a fishing tournament. Fortune was out of the CIA and out of her shell deep in Sinful. She’s about to start her career as a private detective, but she and her team are investigating to prove their friends’ innocence.
