The City Stained Red is my genre of fantasy novel. Instead of focusing on kings, table manners, knighthood, and all the other things related to royalty and their armies, this book is about a small group of adventurers, An underrated profession in the world.
The City Stained Red is that rare book where I basically enjoy spending time with all of the main characters because they’re all interesting in some way. Even the one I didn’t like (the wizard boy was a thug), appeared in some of the book’s best chapters. The way the character group works reminds me of a video game RPG. The characters interact, do side quests, report back, and more. I remember Mass Effect, despite the fact that it’s set in a city whose economy relies on giant spiders and isn’t actually set in space.
