When Roland joined, only good could happen, and this short story (which I first read in the compilation book Everything Last) served his story well. Set before Roland catches up with the Man in Black, where the first Dark Tower novel takes place, Roland is encountered by a group of mutants while on his journey. He is wounded and taken in by a group of cannibal nurses/witches, named the Sisters of Eluria. Here, we are exposed to the powerful story themes of Dark Tower that fans of the series know and love, but more importantly, we are exposed to a Roland, not quite emotionless like him in the following stories. Anything Roland touches turns to gold and this story is no exception.
A great short story about Gilead’s Roland Deushain on his quest for the tower of darkness, this story takes place before Roland meets Jake, Eddie, and his other companions. If you are like me and love the Dark Tower series then don’t miss this story, It doesn’t matter you choose to read it before or after you read the dark tower novels. This is a great story for you to catch Started with the Series and worth reading.
